The other day at our local boba shop I decided to go for a matcha based drink rather than my usual boring go to regular milk tea flavors. The poster on the wall was what sold it for me…a tall glass layered with fresh berries on the bottom and creamy milk intertwined with the beautiful bright green matcha top. Fruit and matcha seemed like an odd combination at the time, I only had hot matcha latte prior so I decided to give it a go.
Love at first sip! It was incredible, a delectable interplay between sweet summer berries with the creamy milk contrasted by the subtly bitter matcha. I thought to myself I need to make this at home as $7.50 a drink was quite steep for what you get – unfortunately while delicious 50% of the volume was ice and sadly after five sips it was over.

During my usual grocery run I was walking down the tea and coffee aisle in Whole Foods and discovered organic ceremonial matcha was on sale at $13.00 for 1.5 oz which was treat! Without hesitation I grabbed it and went straight to the breakfast aisle to grab some organic strawberry jam which was also on sale haha! Then I went a little further and saw that oatmilk was also on sale and grabbed that too, I was set!

Back home I couldn’t wait and immediately proceeded to assemble this drink. I had some leftover strawberries chopped those up and mixed a good heaping tablespoon of the strawberry jam and mashed those at the bottom of a tall glass. Next I placed some ice cubes and topped it with the oatmilk. Finally, the fun part was making the matcha topping but darn I realized I don’t have those fancy ceremonial matcha whisks… Well one must improvise on these occasions because I was already more than halfway assembling this drink! In a pinch, I grabbed a ceramic rice bowl, added a teaspoon or so of matcha powder, some hot water and then grabbed by handy silicone pastry brush and whisked away!
Surprisingly this worked like a charm with good froth. Pour the matcha on the drink and watch the magic happen when you stir it up! It was so good and feels good it’s super affordable to make in 5 min or less. The jam is a great hack for those lazy ones out there (skip the real fruit), you get the fruitiness and sweetness all in one. Try it out with other jams like blueberry or marmalade if you dare and let me know what you think!
